THE PLAY Norman・s play is taut, powerful and uncompromising; the fierce, emotional back-and-forth between mother and daughter unfolding in its haunting storyline. Issues of control over one・s life, hopelessness and suicide are entwined as the play accelerates toward its devastating end.

THE STORY ・Night, Mother takes place in a small house on an isolated country road, shared by Jessie and her mother, Thelma. Jessie suffers from epilepsy; her father is dead; her loveless marriage ended in divorce; her absent son is a petty thief; her last job didn't work out and, in general, her life is stale and unprofitable. As the play begins Jessie asks for her father's gun and calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. At first her mother refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after, Thelma・s sense of desperate helplessness begins to build. In the end, with the inexorability of genuine tragedy, she can only stand by, stunned and unbelieving, as Jessie quietly closes and locks her bedroom door and ends her profound unhappiness in one fatal, stunning and deeply disturbing moment.

THE DIRECTOR AND CAST Directed by Howard Paley (Boy Gets Girl, What I Meant Was), ・night, Mother is a two-woman tour de force starring Micha Sparrow as Thelma and Wendy Perez as Jessie. Micha Sparrow・s theatrical credits include roles in local productions of Don Juan in Chicago (Gecko Jazz Club), Cabot Lane (Le Rideau), Little Shop of Horrors (Shouson Theatre) and most recently The Whole Shebang at McAulay Studio. Wendy Perez honed her acting skills in the United States in various productions including Miracle Worker and A Christmas Carol in Florida; Little Women and Evita in New Jersey; and Spoon River Anthology in Los Angeles.
