Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award-winning** creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

RONA LISA PERETTI (Female, 30-40, Mezzo): The #1 Realtor of Putnam County, she is the former champ (at the 3rd Annual Bee) and returns as moderator. Sweet but stern. Good improvisational skills preferred.

Audition Piece: I LOVE YOU SONG first verse and chorus. Be familiar with the entire I LOVE YOU SONG.

VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH (Male, 30-40, Baritone): After five years absence from the Bee, Panch is back as word pronouncer and judge. The "incident" at the 20th Annual Bee is almost totally forgotten and he is in a good place now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona. Good improvisational skills required.

Audition Piece: THE RULES.

MITCH MAHONEY (Male, 20-40, Tenor): The Official Comfort Counselor, Mitch is doing his community service with the Bee, and he might find he has the knacks for hugs and handing out juice boxes.

Audition Piece: PRAYER OF THE COMFORT COUNSELOR. Be familiar with the I LOVE YOU SONG.

OLIVE OSTROVSKY (Female, 18-30, Mezzo, character age: 12) The pretty young newcomer to the spelling bee. Her mother is an ashram in India and her father always works late. Her best friend is her dictionary. Gentle and kind.

Audition Piece: MY FRIEND THE DICTIONARY. Be familiar with the entire I LOVE YOU SONG.

WILLIAM BARFEE (Male, 18-30, Baritone, character age 12): A Finalist last year, but eliminated because of health reasons (someone put peanuts in the brownies). His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling had boosted him to spelling glory, and even if he only has one working nostril, a touchy personality, a severe peanut allergy, and the mistaken belief that he looks good in shorts. Socially awkward and indignant.

Audition Piece: MAGIC FOOT.

LOGGAINE SCHWARTZANDGRUBENIERRE (Female, 18-30, Mezzo, character age: 10) Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller. She has two gay dads and is the most rabid among the competitors. She speaks with a lisp.

Audition Piece: WOE IS ME and WOE IS ME REPRISE.

MARCY PARK (Female, 18-30, Mezzo, character age: 12) A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed 9th in last year's nationals; She speaks six languages, and is a member of all-American Hockey, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments; sleeps three hours a nite; hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. Gymnastic/Dancing skills essential.

Audition Piece: I SPEAK SIX LANGUAGES

LEAF CONEYBEAR (Male, 18-30, Tenor, character age: 12) The second runner-up in his district, he is competing because the Winner and First Runner up had to go to a Bat Mitzvah). Leaf comes from a large family of former hippies and he makes his own clothes. He's not really that smart, but his heart is in the right place and he has a unique talent of pulling obscure words out of the air. All of the children in his family are named after plants, and all of his words are South-American rodents. Hyperactive, easily distracted and insecure.

Audition Piece: I'M NOT THAT SMART

CHIP TOLENTINO (Male, 18-30, Tenor, character age: 12) Champion of the 24th Annual Bee, he returns to defend his title. However, he finds puberty hitting at the most inopportune moment. Confident, extroverted and cocky.

Audition Piece: MY UNFORTUNATE ERECTION
